i have been lucky to tour my music with saxophonist john o’gallagher on two occasions. he is a relentless, encyclopaedic improviser whose impact on me before, during and after our time on stage (not to mention our conversations over questionable hotel breakfasts) cannot go unthanked. i am also grateful to sam ingvorsen and gwilym jones who, as you can hear here, play with all the telekinetic depth a band leader could ask for.

this recording is from a very special gig at the vortex jazz club in london mid-way through our second tour (celebrating the release of my 2019 record ‘scathed citizens’).   looking back, that album was a sort of love letter-come-eulogy to creative people. or more to the point, a kind of musical coming-to-terms-with my own experiences of anxiety and panic attacks (naively, i only began to notice this in others, particularly those involved in the arts, hence: ‘scathed citizens’, after going through these darker periods myself).   the three years since this recording have not been kind on most. i am fortunate to now be in a better place mentally and am therefore reminded of the glisteningly hopeful ralph waldo emmerson line that influenced the title of the third track here: ’but in the mud and scum of things, there alway, alway something sings’.   i hope that this music brings you as much immense joy as it does for me to finally share it with you.
