one eye shut to the breaking waves is a triptych of chamber works by composer, pianist and improviser olly chalk. composed in 2020, these three distinctly ethereal worlds are named in affectionate hommage to the works of revolutionary american composer morton feldman (in that the title of each piece is it’s instrumentation).   one eye shut to the breaking waves refers to the way in which synth and brass were conceived. here, chalk utilised a sonic blindfold as part of his process; the performers were instructed to record each individual part in isolation and without reference to one another. the resulting works appear as peculiar but enticing tapestries of oscillating moments. improvisation is woven through the fabric of these pieces. in brass, the improvisations appeared as scattered moments with instructions such as: ‘slow angular lines, pitched’ or ‘sounds: falling, rushing, prickly’. synth however, is an entirely improvised composition made up of three solo improvisations that each focus on the low, middle and high ranges of the instrument. this of course leaves voice, which is a through-composed work for six female voices, which explores a short series or luminescent vertical structures. in short, one eye shut to the breaking waves is an exploration in three parts; a celebration of unknown paths converging.
